CELEBRATING ITS 10TH ANNIVERSARY, MUSIC MONDAY IS AN ANNUAL EVENT (FIRST MONDAY IN MAY) THAT BRINGS TOGETHER HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS, MUSICIANS, PARENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO CELEBRATE THE GIFT OF MUSIC IN OUR LIVES, ON THE SAME DAY AT THE SAME TIME. THE COALITION FOR MUSIC LAUNCHED MUSIC MONDAY IN 2005.

    Canadian astronaut, Chris Hadfield, brought his guitar with him to the International Space Station and linked up via live webcast with well over a million students and musicians to sing the song together on Music Monday 2013.

  • “Tommorow is Coming”

    Luke’s song, ‘Tomorrow is Coming’, was specially commissioned to be 2010/11’s edition of the Music Monday anthem by the Coalition and the CBC. Over 700,000 voices joined together on May 2nd 2011 to sing in support of music education. ‘Tomorrow is Coming’ was released on iTunes as a fundraiser for the Coalition for Music Education. A new interactive map on the Music Monday website also allowed participants to see how others were celebrating in their own communities.

    700,000 students (over 2000 schools) across the country celebrated Music Monday in a simultaneous concert performing Serena Ryder’s ‘Sing Sing’. The song became an instant favourite among younger students for its simple but yet catchy melody and "sing-alongability".

    Dala performed the song live at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, ON. Singing and playing along with them at the same time were an estimated 500,000 school kids across Canada. Sheila Carabine and Amanda Walther (Dala) were commissioned to write a special song for the third annual Music Monday

  • “A Little Music”

    In 2004, Chris Tait was asked to write the song “A Little Music” for the Coalition for Music Education in Canada’s first annual Music Monday.  Along with Chris, Tom Goudie and Ian LeFebre also contributed to the writing of the song. A demo was recorded with the Riverdale Youth Singers, based in Toronto.

MEET THE JUDGES
An exciting panel of songwriters, recording artists, music publishers,  industry professionals and  music educators will decide which songwriter will WIN the Yamaha Grand Prize and have their song chosen as the next MUSIC MONDAY ANTHEM. Judges include: Chris Hadfield, Ed Robertson, Marc Jordan, Vivian Barclay, DALA, Luke Doucet, Rob Wells, Artemis Chartier, and Chris Tait.  

Chris Hadfield

Retired CSA Astronaut/ Author/ Musician/ Public speaker

Chris Hadfield became the first Canadian to command a spaceship as Commander of the ISS during the section portion of his five-month stay in space. When living on the ISS, Chris spend some of his free time composing, performing, recording original words and music inspired by his experiences in Space. In fact, Chris filmed the first music video ever made in Space: his version of David Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity’, which has garnered more than 23 million views on YouTube.

Ed Robertson

Singer/ Songwriter/ Record Producer

Ed Robertson is the lead singer, songwriter, and a founding member of Barenaked Ladies. BNL have sold over 14 million albums worldwide and have won eight Juno awards and earned multiple Grammy nominations. Known for such hits as “One Week,” “Pinch Me, “Brian Wilson,” “If I Had $1,000,000” and many more, Barenaked Ladies live shows have become legendary for their hilarious on-stage banter and impromptu raps – leaving fans ever-ready to expect the unexpected.

Marc Jordan

Award winning Singer/Songwriter/Producer

As a songwriter, Marc was first signed to Geffen, and successively to Warner Chappell and Sony Publishing, writing material for a stunning array of artists including Josh Groban, Cher, Bette Midler, Joe Cocker, Bonnie Raitt, Diana Ross, Natalie Cole, Manhattan Transfer, Chicago, Kenny Loggins, Chicago, Amanda Marshall, Holly Cole, Shawn Colvin, Laila Biali, Sophie Milman, and The Tenors. Rod Stewart has covered four of Marc’s songs, most notably his #1 hit, “Rhythm Of My Heart”.

The General Manager of Warner Chappell Music Canada Ltd., Vivian has wide-ranging experience in most areas of the music and broadcast industries. At Warner/Chappell, she works directly with a diverse roster of songwriters including Faber Drive, Jully Black, Saukrates, Tomi Swick, Jets Overhead and Glenn Lewis.

Award-winning producer/songwriter

Representing the Songwriters Association of Canada, Rob Wells is a multi-platinum, award-winning producer/songwriter based in Toronto & Los Angeles. He has worked with numerous multi-platinum selling artists, with songs landing on millions of award winning records.Wells has worked with stars like Justin Bieber, Victoria Duffield, Corey Hart, Ish, Eva Vila, Divine Brown, Keshia Chante, Adam Lambert, Nick Lachey and Backstreet Boys to name a few.

Duo Singers/Songwriters

Juno nominees and winners of the 2010 Canadian Folk Music Award for Vocal Group of the Year, Amanda Walther and Sheila Carabine of Dala write and sing in harmony best described as angelic.

Luke Doucet

Singer/ Songwriter

Two-time Juno Award nominee Luke Doucet is a landmark singer-songwriter in the Canadian indie landscape. Doucet has made his name as a first-rate guitarist and creative force, with five solo albums to date.

Artemis Chartier

Singer-songwriter, Co-Founder of SASS

Artemis is a teacher, singer-songwriter and Co-Founder of SASS, the School Alliance of Student Songwriters. SASS is a free young people’s artistic community which fosters literacy, creativity, student success and wellness, which she has co-managed in 25-50 schools with the gifted Dale Russell for the past eleven years.

Chris Tait

Singer/Songwriter/Producer

Chris Tait is a Canadian singer–songwriter and producer. In addition to his solo albums, Chris was formerly singer/guitarist of the band Chalk Circle, recording three certified-gold albums and touring internationally, and wrote and performed with Canadian group Big Faith.
